Meet Mr. Ramachandra Shastri, a sweet gentle brahmin man who stays in Gokarna. I have known him for years now. Initially he used to have a puja shop where he would sell idols & pictures of gods & goddesses, books on scriptures and so on. Every now & then I would spend some time with him & buy little stickers of gods & goddesses from him, which I would usually give away to others as small presents & gifts.
In the recent years, he has given up that shop for rent & has opened up a small store in front of his home. As his children are now working & earning for themselves, he lives a simple life with his wife & enjoys a retired life.
Recently, he came across a life & death situation. It so happened that when he was doing some work in his backyard, a cobra came out of nowhere & bit him on his ankle.
Now your everyday person would feel afraid, anxious & would probably faint from the shock rather that from the effect of the poison.
But our dear Mr. Shastri showed true courage in these moments. As much as he was in pain from the poison flowing through his veins, he went into his home and brought out a plastic container, within which he trapped the cobra in.
He then managed to take the cobra along with him to a hospital in Kumta city, which is around 30 kms from here.
Since he had the snake with him on arrival, it was easy for the specialists there to provide him with the anti-venom & save his life.
He spent around three weeks in his sons home, along with his grand children, in Hubli, to relax & heal after the whole ordeal was over. Fortunately I happened to meet him this morning & felt extremely charged & inspired after hearing his near death adventure.
He is indeed such a very sweet & innocent man, but showed true bravery & courage when coming face to face with fear.
He has truly earned much respect by the community here & definitely has become a Super Hero in my eyes!
